Prune Organic Deli & Workshop

Living in a city like Hong Kong makes eating healthy difficult. Not only do people lack the time to invest in a healthy eating lifestyle, there are simply not many choices. That is why Prune, located in Sai Ying Pun, is a pleasant surprise. Every dish on the menu is organic, with raw vegetables and fruits being their focal ingredients. The lemon chia seed pancake is one of Prune’s finest dishes. The pancakes are not overly sweet and the fresh blueberries, bananas and raspberries add an extra refreshing flavor to the classic breakfast dish.Although Prune is quite pricey given its portions, it is certainly understandable once you taste the food the restaurant has to offer. If eating healthy comes with a price, then Prune is something I would definitely pay for.
3 of us ordered the Acai berry bowl, Lemon chia seed waffle and the GP burger. The best is the waffle and the worst is the burger. Let's talk about the waffle first. It is priced at $108 and I have to say this combination of ingredients is creative and surprisingly good. However the food was not hot enough and the condensed milk was way too sweet to be regarded as healthy. The pistacchio bits were a bit too tiny. Overall this dish did bring us delight. For the acai berry bowl ($98), again it was way too sweet and we couldn't really taste the acai flavour in it. The fruits were in tiny amount and the whole thing was served in a bowl only slightly larger than a cup. The buckwheat groats tasted good and nutty. This dish was average. The worst dish was the GP burger ($108). We were so disappointed as the burger was as small as a Maxim bun and the patty was so oily and greasy without much real food to be tasted. The salad on the side was average. This must be the burger with the lowest CP ratio in town. If yoh have to pay $108 for a veggie burger, forget about it and rather go for the lemon chia seed waffle which was more reasonable. But still, all food items were way way overpriced.
Sassy, rude, pretentious server. Whenever I called for his attention, his eyes rolled back so far back into his head I kind of hoped they would stay there. Watched him serve the Caucasian women next to us, and he was a total darling. I'm Asian (American), and the only time I've dealt with this racist attitude is in Hong Kong and Singapore. Unbelievable. Maybe if the service wasn't so terrible, I would be less critical. I come from an area where Acai bowls are a staple, so anything to satisfy the craving in Hong Kong would be nice. Acai bowls are supposed to be thicker than a smoothie, hence eating it in bowl form. It should be colorful, topped with a bright array of fruit, a generous helping of granola, and drizzled with honey. The bowl from Prune was a smoothielike consistency, with 1.5 strawberries and a sprinkling of granola. No honey. So pardon me if my expectations are too high, but this place flunked the whole Acai bowl.
Website: http://www.prunedeliworkshop.com/cafemenu/A lazy Saturday morning perfect time to drag my homeloving self out of the house and explore the hood. Had K with me today, thanks K. Wanted to try out the watereddown version of Grassroots Pantry for some time. Haven't heard many people mention it but read about it in blogs a few times, therefore. Environment:Tucked away at the very, very end of a culdesac it was extremely secluded and easy to miss. But it's there. The word 'PRUNE' is etched onto the concrete entrance. And it's right next to Grassroots pantry. There are about 1213 seats. And 45 of those are bar seats. The high chairs are not too comfortable. And there is zero, literally, zero privacy. You prolly won't want to come if you're about to discuss with your friend something sensitive. The world is small. There is one long table near the entrance of the cafe, sitting around 8. Even less privacy there. Service:You can tell that almost all the staff working there have personally invested into the business. That's my guess. None of them were particularly enthusiastic to greet new guests probably because there's enough to do already even without a full house. But our water glasses were refilled quite frequently, so that was nice. And the owner asked if everything was alright in the end. Food: Honestly kaled salad $98 (Curly Kale. Quinoa. Broccoli. Seaweed. Walnuts. TahiniZaatar Dressing. Dehydrated Buckwheat Crackers)It tasted quite fresh and healthy but seriously it is not worth my quid. I tried to make this last for more than 10 minutes. The process was painful. I am not a rabbit. I like to chew on large mouthfuls of food which will fill my mouth with an exciting mix of flavours. Anyway. I wanted more. So this means I liked the dish, I liked the different textures, I liked the occaisonal buckwheat cracker giving a crunch and the occasional pool of zataar dressing which gave lovely earthy flavours to the salad. Again, if I could have about double the current portion size, I would've been satisfied.Eggs en cocotte $90 (Sundried Tomatoes. Artichoke. Sauteed Spinach & Shiitake. Sourdough Soldiers) K ordered this. I don't like runny eggs but tried a little bit nevertheless. I liked the taste couldn't appreciate the texture though. But again. Not enough. More please. Especially more spinach and mushrooms please. Mean green drink $48 (lots of fruits and veg and ginger); Immune booster $45(quite, quite sour. with lemon iirc)I ordered the mean green. It was average. Immune booster was really sour. But maybe that's the citrusy stuff needed to boost immunity...? Probably won't order it again. Lime and coconut pie $78Again, disappointingly sour. I must say though, that the coconut cream was quite delicious. It's not an ice cream, just some kind of coconut cream. It was rich. The base was not digestives, some kind of crushed nut with dessicated coconut. But I wouldn't repeat order. Conclusion:Will I return? Unlikley. The menu is extremely short and the food is seriously too expensive and unfulfilling. I left feeling only less than half full. For what I paid, I would consider it a ripoff. I think I'll visit Grassroots pantry next door, pay a little more, but enjoy a higher degree of satisfaction when I leave.
